Tesla's monopoly supplier Aptiv halts some manufacturing in Shanghai due to coronavirus outbreak

Automotive Aptiv sent a phone call to its Shanghai plant that is giving Tesla and General Motors (GM) a joint venture, responding to the COVID-19 issue on Tuesday, a source told Reuters.

Aptiv's spokesperson declined to comment on the shutdown, but said the company complied with government orders and would not affect consumers.

Aptiv has several manufacturing plants in the Jiading district, west of Shanghai. The areas are currently unaffected by the city's second phase of the COVID-19 shutdown which began on Monday.

Four sources said workers at the rope-making site were ordered to go home on Tuesday. They declined to provide names because the information was not made public.

Affected staff were ordered to stay home on Wednesday and await further warnings, the source added.

The factory's consumers include Tesla and GM's Shanghai partner with SAIC Motor Corp., the two sources said.

Tesla, GM and SAIC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Wires are important for connecting power lines up to 5 km (3.1 miles) in an ordinary vehicle. They are unique to each model and cannot be transformed into a car.

Automakers including Volkswagen and BMW are seeking alternatives to cable ties and other fixtures as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a major automaker, disrupts assembly lines and disrupts connected equipment.

According to Jiadinggu's website, Aptiv is one of the largest automotive companies in China and supplies almost every automaker in China.

In addition to Tesla and GM, it offers Volkswagen partnerships with SAIC, Ford and Toyota. Reuters could not immediately determine the number of Aptiv shutdowns and the resumption of production. Manufacturing closed in Shanghai, home to 26 million people, tightening its first phase of shutdown, with more than 4,400 new patients reported daily on Tuesday.

The western part of Shanghai will be closed from Friday until the beginning of April 5.

According to China's "negative suppression" manual, city authorities will promptly identify and exclude all patients and neighbors, and places where the disease is detected can be closed for up to 14 days.

According to sources, GM managed to keep raw material levels at normal levels by letting workers sleep in the plant despite the shutdown of Shanghai. Tesla halted production for four days on Monday.
